Dog Survives 40 Days Stranded In Mountains

SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS, Calif. (CBS)
Buc seen shortly after his rescue.
Terina Held/CBS

A very strong-willed dog has returned to its owner after surviving 40 days in the freezing wilderness of the Santa Cruz Mountains, CBS station KPIX-TV reports.
Buck, a black lab, got lost near his home Jan. 6. Owner Terina Held thought he got swept up in a swollen river during a rain storm. Flyers went up and calls were made to shelters, but Held gave up after five weeks of searching.
"We figured he was probably dead or what not. Or someone fell in love with him and (they) weren't going to give him back," Held recalled.
But the story changed on Feb. 16 when neighbor Mark Smith took the day off to go hiking on his birthday. Smith and his dog Copper heard whimpering and found the weak, emaciated black lab stranded on a patch of dry river bed not far from where Buck went missing.
Smith scooped him up, waded 200 yards through an ice-cold creek, and carried Buck to safety.
"I would think that anybody who loves animals and was walking and seeing what I saw probably wouldn't have hesitated to do what I did," said Smith.

Buck lost 50 pounds as he lay in the cold without food for more than a month. Held is relieved to have her companion back at home.

"I know he knows that we love him, and maybe he didn't want to leave us hanging dry," said Held. "Maybe he wanted to make sure to give us more love before his dying day."

Makeover of the Week

Hi, I’m Kayli, and as the makeover of the week.  I now look and feel Marvelous!,
Simply Marvelous!

Pet of the week

Hi, I’m Rosie and I’ve been chosen as the pet of the week!

It’s kind of like winning an Oscar, or an Emmy or something. I have so many good qualifications to win such an award. I’m a good friend to all I meet, (the one on the left is my friend Gerdi ) I’m obedient, (well, at least I’m working on it during my stay this week at Best Friends!) And…I’m extremely smart, lovable and of course, modest.

My major concern right now is: Which outfit should I wear to my  acceptance speech?  I know I will be photographed on the red carpet camp; I want to look my best!

Dog Scouts of America, IndyDog SmartTails Troop #177

WE DID IT! Our troop was awarded its first *Blue Ribbon* as a troop this year. In order to be awarded this you have to have *earned* over 300 points. Points are earned by the amount of new members, badges earned by our scouts, activities we have done through out the year, fund raising activities and community involvement. Many of our scouts earned their DSA badges, Clean Up America badges, Swimming, canoeing, and several other badges. This past weekend several also tested for and passed their First Aid and for Basic Manners badges. Each badge comes with a list of items they must meet or *qualify* with under testing of a certified Scout Master of, in the absense of one we can video tape their tests and send it in to the Dog Scouts for veiwing and approval. We also have a member who is now a certified *Scout Master*. Gayle is able to test our scouts for several of the badges

In case you are new to this and don't know what the Dog Scouts are all about, read on. I am happy to provide potentiasl new members with information! Once having read the following if your interest has been piqued, please call me as Best Friends for more information on meeting times and how to become a Scout member. We test for various badges through out the year and can test at meetings when someone thinks their pet is ready for the *big test*.

What is Dog Scouts?
Dog Scouts of America (DSA) was established in 1995. It is a non-profit organization people who are dedicated to enriching their lives and the lives of others with dogs. Founder, Lonnie Olson, has made it her life's ambition to experience as many dog sports and skills as possible with her dogs. If you believe that dogs really enjoy learning new things and spending time with their owners, you're our kind of dog person. Dogs were not meant to be "furniture." Working dogs want to work. Without having an acceptable activity in which to use up all of that energy that comes "built-in" with a dog, our canine companions often get into trouble. By better understanding how your dog thinks, how he learns, and what drives his behavior, and by participating in a variety of dog sports and activities, you will become a more responsible dog owner. We hope to prevent misunderstandings, communication failures and behavioral problems which often lead to dogs being given up as a "lost cause."

We hold monthly meetings here at Best Friends Pet Care (the second Saturday of each month, unless otherwise noted). We also meet elsewhere through out the month to work on different badges. We work on different raisers through the year, and we do an end of the summer camping and canoeing trip (yes the dogs canoe, can you?) and walk as a troop (for all who can attend) with the annual Mutt-Strutt. We have a lot of fun with this troop, with some members being more active then others. You can attend as this fit into your life, but keep in mind, an active dog is a happy dog!

Call us at Best Friends for more information. My name is Kristi and I am the troop leader.

Meet The Staff

MEET THE STAFF
JESSICA EARLY
Jessica started with Best Friends Pet Care in Indianapolis just before the Christmas holidays. She came in full of confidence and quickly followed through with her expertise. She started off helping in our kennels, getting to know our four legged clients. Unable to help herself from falling in love with them all, she has proved to be invaluable as a staff member.
Once the holidays passed and she was able to begin her training in our front lobby as a Lead CSR. Jessica learned the ropes quickly and has since been promoted to her position of hire as a Manager Intern.
Jessica shares her home with her three Siberian Huskies, Alaska, Denali and Kodiak and her Main Coon kitty, Romeo. They come to work with her and hang out on certain days, or they join some of our daycamp friends for some much needed playtime. In Jessica's spare time she likes to play with her trio, taking them to the parks or just hanging out playing at home.
When she is just trying to let her brain relax Jessica likes to engross her mind deeply into Reality TV or by watching comedies and cartoon type movies (go Roger Rabbit!)
Though you will often times see Jessica on the front desk working, her most favorite thing about working at Best Friends is in working with the four legged clients that come in to us. Jesscia says she loves the look on the human clients faces when they pick up their beloved fur-kids. They look so happy and thankful!
Please help us all in welcoming Jessica aboard our crew here. In the famous words of Mr. Spock...may you *live long and prosper* here at Best Friends!

Wanna come to my Party?

What's the best way to celebrate a birthday? Set up a great party, of course. However, if it's going to be for your dog, the mechanics will be a little bit different. If you have no idea where to begin or how exactly to do it, here are some tips for you:

1. Choose your Guest List. If you're thinking of inviting other dogs, then you'll need to invite their owners too. Knowing how many are going to attend will give you an idea how much money you have to set aside for the party. Also, you will need to think carefully about the behavior of the dogs you plan to invite, as you don't want to mix dogs with poor social skills. You don't want to turn the event into a complete disaster.

2. Choose your Venue. You can use your own back yard if it is fenced and large enough, or if you prefer, inside your own home. Don't want your party outside? Don't want 20 dogs running through your own home? Best Friends has the PERFECT solution! We have a large indoor, (available on weekends only) climate controled room at our facility that is great for party times! Best Friends can also provide you with tables, chairs, lambs woolies for the pets to rest on, water bowls and our dedicated staff can even help you plan the party. Call 317-841-8182 for more information and room/party rates.

3 . Prepare and send out invitations. When you've decided on the venue, time, and guest list, you're now ready to send out invitations. There are actually dog party organizers who can help you with the designing and sending of invites, as well as with the organizing of the occasion. But if you think you have the skills to do so, you can just use any free templates from the internet and add your own personal touch.

4. Determine the kinds of activities you're going to do on his birthday. All food and no play can still make a birthday party a little boring. That's why you need to come up with a list of activities that will liven up the occasion. Now, since it's not just going to be dogs that will be around, it would be great if you can plan out games that would be fun for both the pet owners and the small dogs. Relay games are great examples, since dogs love to run and compete with the others.

5. Doggy Bags and Prizes. What's a game without a prize? To keep everyone motivated and always on their feet, tease them with great goodies and prizes. Dog toys are a favourite. Dog owners, on the other hand, may receive leashes or harnesses with a small message from the celebrant printed on them.

Lastly, don't forget the cake. There are specialty dog bakeries who can create delicious-tasting layered cakes for your pets. Cap the entire occasion with a blowing of an edible beef flavoured candle.

Seniors and Supplements?

We at Best Friends understand the importance of proper care of our pets, at all ages. When boarding here we take extra special care of our geriatric bunch. Following is an article on supplements for our seniors:

Some senior dogs may see some benefits with supplements. Hip and joint problems have been greatly diminished by these types additions to their nutritional needs. Arthritis and other joint pain can be helped with supplements such as glucosamine and prescribed medications from your doctor.

Chondroitin with glucosamine has shown senior dogs to have marked improvement in their mobility and their quality of life. Along with weight control, the senior dog won't have the agility and energy of a puppy, but will have more movement and flexibility in their joints, hips, and legs. Glucosamine can be bought at local drug stores or health food stores but you should ask you vet before you use and get an idea about the dosage. Too much of any supplement can be as harmful as it is beneficial.

Supplements for diet is recommended when you dog needs something more from their diet than what their food is giving them. This can occur when you dog's food, even though you picked a good food with the help of your vet, still is not providing the nutritional value your dog needs. Because an older dog usually loses more electrolytes in their urinary and kidney systems, they need to get more of these vital minerals and vitamins from other areas. Another cause of a need for supplements is that your dog just eats less than they used to. This could be because of teeth pain or other oral diseases or that their metabolism is slowing down and they eat less so not to feel overfull or bloated.

Benefits of good grooming

Grooming a dog builds a bond between the owner and the dog, it is something that should be an enjoyable experience for both parties.

Regular grooming, every day if possible, has three benefits.

Firstly it helps build that bond between the owner and the dog. Starting with puppy grooming you reinforce a social relationship between owner and dog, mothers always groom their puppy.

Pet grooming can allow the owner to check for early signs of health problems and hopefully prevent them developing.

The obvious benefit is the fact it keeps the coat looking in first class condition.

Grooming every day can remove the need to bathe the dog, except in the most extreme circumstances. You may choose to visit the dog groomer and allow your dog to be bathed and pampered with the use of specialist tools such as dog grooming scissors, dog clippers, a special dog bath with dog shampoo available. Be careful though you do not want to over do bathing, too many baths can lead to dry skin or even the opposite, greasy skin, where the dog has produced too much sebum (natural oils) to compensate for all that is washed away.

For dogs, like hard coated terriers and poodles, a special technique called stripping is used to remove the dead hair that is retained within the coat. With double coated dogs such as Golden Retrievers, they normally shed their undercoat twice a year and their top coat once. Your regular grooming can help reduce the aftermath that would be left on your carpet. Single coated dogs such as Yorkshire Terriers, Pugs, Lhasa Apso and Dalmatians need to be groomed with care as they may be very sensitive to wire brushes.
(Best Friends has experienced groomers and we offer the Shedicure for dogs who drop hair all over your home.)

All grooming should be done with the dog in a relaxed position, either standing or in a "Down".

When grooming you should check as you work down your dog.

Eyes - you are looking for discharge, redness, tears or anything that looks wrong and maybe even foreign bodies that may be in the eye. Hold your dogs head and tell the dog to "Look" at you.

Ear - discharge, strange smell, scratches or redness are signs you need to be on the look out for. Gently inspect the inside and the outside of the ear. never push anything down into the ear if you are trying to clean.

Nose - again any discharge or scratches should be dealt. A visual check should pick up any problems.

Mouth and teeth - bad breath, plaque, missing or broken teeth or lumps. Brushing teeth regularly is a very good idea. Any serious problems here need the attention of your vet.

Skin and Coat - check for dryness or greasiness, flakes of skin, parasites, lumps, bald patches, matted hair, dirt or rashes. Massage your dog all over will let you find any of these problems. Stiff brush or rake will remove most dead hair followed by the use of a soft brush to give a soft and shiny coat.

Nails - look for tears or missing nails and infections. Exercise should normally keep the nails short but if they do grow too long it is better to let an expert groomer or vet deal with the cutting. Never use scissor a specialist pair of mail clippers are needed.

Feet - check the pads and between the pads and toes for any seeds or such like or any infection. A visual inspection should be sufficient to check this.

Anus - heck for swelling or discharge. Anal glands might become blocked and need emptying or an infection can occur. A messy job you could do but I usually leave it to the vet.

So groom regularly and use the time wisely, it will help you keep your dog in tip top shape.
